Your questions answered

What can I expect from my first visit?

Welcome - A professional, warm, friendly welcome and to be seen promptly and always by the same physiotherapist Shirley-Ann Walters MCSP at appointment times agreed with you. Case history - A detailed, confidential assessment discussion to gather the facts about your problem area, previous injuries, your medical history and any medications. You can ask questions, discuss your concerns and feel included throughout the process. Physical examination - A practical based assessment including posture, simple movements, looking at muscles, bones, nerves, connective tissues and how they relate to each other and your symptoms, job, lifestyle and daily activities. A hands-on examination to gently feel for tenderness, restrictions and physical changes. A clear explanation of how the findings relate to your symptoms, causes, what treatments, exercises and advice may be needed to support your healing process and how you can help yourself. Evaluation, progression and review at each subsequent session designed especially for you. Treatment such as gentle joint articulation, soft tissue massage, gentle stretches, exercises, delicate connective tissue work, and sometimes Laser or Ultrasound therapy, may be used, with your agreement. The aim is to ease underlying causes to relieve pain and encourage harmonious movement to be restored. Onward referral and communication with other professionals such as your GP or consultant, with your permission, if required.

How many visits will it take?

This depends on the condition you present with, how long you have had the symptoms, the speed your body responds to treatment, and the frequency. Sometimes only one appointment is required - however, on average 3-6 sessions are typical, sometimes more. Standard sessions last up to an hour, sometimes a shorter half-hour session is all that’s needed. The aim is to help you reach your potential in as few treatments as possible.

What are your fees and charges?

Please see our list of fees here Standard Sessions £70 please allow up to an hour Half hour sessions £50 where appropriate For longer sessions / multiple conditions £100 for 1.5 hours Local home visit sessions £100 allowing up to an hour Please ask about BUPA or if a receipt is required.

Do I need consent/referral from my GP or other Medical Practitioner?

Most people come on a self-referred self-pay basis, which is often a good place to start if you are not sure who to see about your condition. Referrals from GP’s, Consultants and other healthcare professionals are most welcome, and you can request with them the physiotherapist you wish to see in most instances. (If insured, please check your Private Medical Insurance policy and cover agreements with us before booking, and ask for receipts to claim back unless BUPA’s direct invoicing) Local home visits may be possible for those genuinely unable to attend the practice.

What should I bring or wear?

It is important to feel relaxed during your session. Some people are happy to undress down to their underwear, others prefer to wear a vest or shorts - wear something you are comfortable in. Please bring your diary to make follow-up appointments and turn off your mobile phone if you bring it with you. Bring sports or other shoes with you if relevant, and copies of any relevant test results, X-ray reports, scans and letters can be helpful if you have them.

Do I need massage or physiotherapy?

If you are not sure whether you need to book for physiotherapy or massage, then you probably have some symptoms and it is generally best to book for physiotherapy. Massage and hands-on therapies may be a key part of your treatment. Either way that can be decided as needed in the assessment. Please complete the forms sent out to you by email before your session to save time.
